Γεια σας! Είμαι η Βίκυ Τουρτουρά, Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανής καταγωγής. Το ergasia blog επικοινώνησε μαζί μας και μας ζήτησε να κάνουμε μια παρουσίαση της προσπάθειάς μας, με την ελπίδα να είναι μια μικρή πηγή έμπνευσης. Ελπίζω να με συγχωρέσετε αλλά θα σας πω την ιστορία μας στα Αγγλικά, μιας και αισθάνομαι πιο άνετα. So here it goes...
Image Mechanics is a digital creative agency based in Sydney founded by Jason, a Kiwi and Vicki an Aussie with Greek heritage.
Image Mechanics started in New Zealand 2004. In 2008 Jason flew to Sydney for a project which ignited his desire for wanting a bigger chunk of the pie and that is where we joined forces. In 2009 however, with the recession breaking, it wasn’t a lucrative time to expand let alone start up a business. A few people thought we were mad, in fact at times, we even thought we were mad.
Companies were hemorrhaging staff, we were struggling to keep the staff we had on, creative budgets were being cut, projects put on the back burner and these were all real stories, not just news flash or hype you disassociate from the next day. People we knew were losing their jobs, having to sell their homes cars and were struggling to make ends meet.
We were at a cross road. Get jobs, or just keep going? Thing was, there were no jobs. Recruitment was at a freeze and the recruitment industry seemed like it had kicked the bucket. It was really a case of sink or swim or just tread water and make do with the best of what you have. And in any case, how could one walk away from a 5 year investment. We didn’t want to be that statistic of business that fail in the first 5 years just because of a recession.
We had a loyal client base in New Zealand, but the utilisation of our services slowed down and consequentially our funds for investing into the business and launching into the Australian market full steam ahead did too. But life doesn’t always present ideal scenarios and success is just as much about having a go, doing your best, learning along the way and then looking back and seeing how far you have come even in an unsupportive environment. And its not just about the financial growth either, it’s about enjoying what you do and personal development. It’s my belief that it’s better to have had a go than to be left looking back wondering, what if.
It’s survival. You either lay down and die or you take action, adapt, change strategy, keep moving and look for innovative ways to keep the wheel turning. And that is precisely what we did. It’s our first year of operation in Australia, we have no regrets. We have worked with some great clients and met some wonderful people along the way and slowly but surely we are getting where we would like to be. That’s not to say it hasn’t been challenging and at times you feel like giving up.
I think in such times you got to look deep within yourself and think, what can I do for myself. When you find yourself out of work, that isn’t to say there isn’t opportunity. There may not be an opportunity at a company of your interest to be an employee, but perhaps starting your own business is your destiny. The world is full of people requiring goods and services and it just takes a bit of guts to stand up and say...Yeah...I am going to do this! Even if everyone else thinks you are mad. Even if you have no capital. Some of history’s most successful people started from humble beginnings........
